The Black Cloister

Luther House, Wittenberg

In 1502, the same year as the founding of the Wittenberg University, construction was begun on the cloister of the Augustinians and was completed in 1505. With the closing of the cloister in 1526, the newly-wedded Luthers were given the building. Luther lived here with his family until his death in 1546. Katharina lived here until her death in 1552.
